After moving to California, I spent a year driving around the state. I went to some fascinating places: Chez Panisse, a Fresno cattle ranch, a Silicon Valley startup, the beach at Maverick’s. I went to parks like Sequoia and Joshua Tree. I met people like Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, the rapper Funk Doobiest, the Eureka fire chief. California is a beautiful place to sketch. It’s also diverse. I spent a lot of time on the phone trying to convince people to let me see inside their studio or ranch or prison.
